Gulliver Travels Part 4

Gulliver leaves his pregnant wife only after five months to go back to sea. He then comes across this island with creatures with human like characteristics. These creatures are actually humans but without respect, sanity, or anything. These creatures were called yahoos. They then approached Gulliver with intentions of hurting him but was saved by the horses. The horses are just like normal horses but they communicate like humans. Gulliver stays with the horses and learns their government and way of life. Gulliver was accused by the horses of being a yahoo but persuaded them otherwise. He explained how everything was where he came from. The horses got very affended when Gulliver was explaining how they were used back at his home. Things only got worse from then. Gulliver master then tells him he could no longer stay there. He then goes back home but is angered. everyone their reminds him of yahoos.

In part 4 Swift uses satire to mainly discredit human society as a whole. It showed how people really are. For example how the horses looked down on the yahoos as beast, creatures, and thought they were so much better. Gulliver didn’t mind staying however. He actually thought it was better. There were no crimes or anything of the sort.

Gulliver’s Travel Part 3

Gulliver has only been in England for 10 days before he decides to journey off again. He sets off for the West Indies. While on this journey Gulliver is abducted and sent off only with a small portion of food. After being at sea he notices something blocking the sun. It is a floating island which is Luputa. As usual he doesn’t understand the language that the people speak. They use mostly math and symbols to communicate. Gulliver didn’t like it here so then went to Legato. While here Gulliver finds a man who tells him about an academy where new theories and practices are being developed. After leaving Legato he ends up at Glubbdubdrib. Here they were known for calling upon spirits and Gulliver used his special ability to reveal the truth about people in his past. Gulliver then finds his way back to his original home.

Swift uses satire in part 3 showing how people thought just because they knew math and science that they were better than and smarter than most people. This of course proves to be wrong. These people tried to rely on science and math for the answers for everything. Another thing he pointed out was the Royal Society. It seemed like every scientist that had a say so in anything was apart of this organization.

Shortly after returning home Gulliver once again sets for sail. Gulliver set for sale June 20, 1702. His destined location was Surat but he ended up in “The Cape of Good Hope”. Once leaving there they ended up finding an island where they could search for food and resources. Gulliver looks for food and everything but finds nothing. He sets to return the boat with his crew. once arriving he is shocked by what he sees. Gulliver was then taken by this massive person. The giant of course spoke a different language so Gulliver had to learn the language of the giants. Later on Gulliver was used as a show act. Everyone found him interesting because he was so tiny and they had never seen anything like him. They then traveled all around using Gulliver as a money attraction. After this started Gulliver soon was run to the grown. He was then bought by the queen for a large amount of gold pieces. Once there it was a problem. The queen already had a dwarf and now that Gulliver was the shortest person around he took his spot. The dwarf didn’t like this. He did everything in his power to keep Gulliver away and out of sight. As usual Gulliver tries everything in his power to please the king and queen but he just can’t. Gulliver then decides it’s time to travel home. On his journey he was awaken and found himself in the air. He falls in the water and just so happen its by an English ship and travels home.

The authors purpose behind writing this was to inform you on how the 18th century really was. He does this in a joking sarcastic tone but still in a way that you can see the mockery. He made another character opposite of King George I. Now that he is with giants and not the little people he sees how much size and power affected the European society in the 18th century.

Gulliver’s Travels Part One

Gulliver’s travel tells the story of how Gulliver ended up on his journey’s to the different islands. The first island he ended up on Lilliput. While in Lilliput Gulliver feels out of place. This was of course expected because he is a giant on an island with little people. Everyday life was harder for him because of this. He even had problems releasing his bodies functions. Because of him being a giant the people of Lilliput are afraid of him. Even though they were worried Gulliver didn’t harm not one of them. Instead of destroying everything they had he tried to make peace and get them to except him. Almost all of the people accepted him. They also made laws so that he would fit in better. Gulliver is so caught up in trying to make them happy he does everything that the emperor tells him to do.

Now that everyone has warmed up to Gulliver the emperor ask him a favor. He ask Gulliver if he would protect them from all their enemies. With Gulliver (The Giant) they would be unstoppable. Gulliver agreed wanting to keep peace and make the emperor happy. Lilliput’s neighbor Blefuscu then tries to attack them. Gulliver did the bare minimum to stop them, nothing extra at all. This is where he angered the emperor of Lilliput. He wanted Gulliver to kill and demolish all of the enemies but he refused. They planned to try and harm Gulliver but his friend gave him a warning. Gulliver then leave before so and goes to Blefuscu. Once he arrives he realized that their emperor is way worse than at Lilliput. Gulliver soon returns back to Lilliput. Everyone is still mad at him but still expects him to always save the day. The princess palace catches fire and then he has to save the day. He does this in an unusual way. He has to pee on the palace to save them. All the people of Lilliput start to trade on Gulliver even though all the good he has done for them. They then discuss punishment for him. Some are very harsh. Gulliver then decides to leave before anything happened and returned to Blefuscu. They then allow him to return to his actual home. He kept a few life stock animals from his journey.

The satire for part one is quite easy. The emperor and powerful people of Lilliput control everything. No matter what Gulliver did it was never good enough. The emperor always found a way to complain about Gulliver’s actions. The emperor just wants all the power just like in history. Power tends to drive a person crazy and make them become a control freak.

Gulliver Travel Chapter 1

The story started off introducing Gulliver as he was growing up. He was the third of five sons. At the age of fourteen he was sent to Emanuel college in Cambridge. Following years his father sent him small sums of money. He laid the money out to help learn navigation and different types of mathematics. May 4, 1699 he set sail for Bristol. The voyage was horrible. The weather and a huge rock causing many deaths and the splitting of the crew. Gulliver then was washed up upon sea when he was discovered by little people. Before he could wake and see what was going on he was tied up.
